![]() “As dark and as twisted and as sad and strange as our show is, I was determined to write a love letter to those Black families and Great Migration families that had sort of scrapped and scraped and made impossible journeys across the country…only to be confronted with the exact same tactics they left behind in the Jim Crow South,” he said. Little Marvin admitted that it could be grim work immersing himself in such ugly chapters of American history while working on Them-but important work nonetheless. When he dreamed up the series, several years back, “it was literally every day that I was reading about something which got me thinking about my own experiences being followed in stores, my own experiences being watched when I’m in a ‘wrong neighborhood.’ Those experiences extend all the way back through my life, but they also extend all the way back to the history of this country.” And in 1952 with a series of new developments, the demographics change almost overnight.”īeyond this slice of history, Marvin told Vanity Fair that he was overwhelmed with contemporary inspirations for Them. ![]() There was a brief, harmonious inflection point in Compton, a moment when the racially restrictive covenants were banned, said historian Josh Sides-“where Blacks and whites coexisted quite peacefully in Compton.” But the moment did not last long, per KCET: “When the legality of racially restrictive covenants was destroyed, white developers with the primary goal of turning a profit looked to creating affordable housing for aspiring middle class African Americans who wanted to move to Compton. Little Marvin was clear that Compton, with its intense segregation tactics, was far from an outlier at the time: “Compton was emblematic of an experience of it happening across the country.” “Anything from acts of vandalism, like burned-down salons, nails up and down the driveway, windows being destroyed to really psychologically terrifying tactics.” ![]() Urban League had actually identified, I want to say, 26 or 27 types of tactics that Black folks experienced,” Little Marvin said. In one act of startling aggression, white neighbors set up chairs outside the Emorys’ new home and blast radios. The first season of Them takes place across 10 days in East Compton, chronicling how the Emory family is met with shocking hostility from their neighbors. There was no more effective tool in 20th America than the racially restrictive covenant in terms of keeping neighborhoods white.” As historian Josh Sides similarly pointed out in an interview with KCET, “It’s difficult to overstate how white Compton was in the early ’50s and late ’40s…exclusively white with an extraordinary web of racially restrictive covenants with a very aggressive policing strategy about keeping Black people out.

![]() In this post, we discussed how you can use HTTP GET and POST methods to send GraphQL requests. Let’s assume we have a basic Apollo Server that returns a greeting with an optional name variable: const Conclusion You’re familiar with the basics of Apollo Server and have completed the getting started guide. You know the difference between a query and a mutation. We’ll also discuss the limitations of each approach. In this post, we’ll learn how to make GraphQL requests over HTTP with just GET and POST methods. While we recommend using Apollo Studio’s Sandbox, since GraphQL runs on top of HTTP, it’s possible to make GraphQL requests using any of the tools you were accustomed to using building out your apps with REST. change PostgreSQL with MySQL, switch from a REST to a gRPC API, etc., all without breaking the JSON API contract. When I first started learning about GraphQL, I thought that I needed a special tool to make GraphQL requests. In the future, you'll be able to easily swap out DataSources, e.g. This allows us to decouple API consumers from the DataSources itself. just using generated GraphQL APIs, we're adding an abstraction layer, the JSON API. WunderGraph merges all DataSources into one unified "virtual Graph" which you can then securely expose as a JSON API by writing GraphQL Operations. GraphQL as an ORM to your APIs, an API Orchestration Layer.Ĭurrently, you can use REST, GraphQL, Apollo Federation (with Subscriptions), PostgreSQL and MySQL as a DataSource for your WunderGraph application. The approach described above is the fastest way to implement a Backend For Frontend (BFF) on the fly.Ĭombine it with the capability to add any number of DataSources and upstream protocols, and we're turning GraphQL into way more than just a Query Language. I don't see GraphQL as a simple Query Language where you build a server, add a client and call it a day. That's what we do automatically, so let's have a look at the generated JSON-Schemas!Īs we've discussed, adding a JSON API with JSON-Schema in front of your GraphQL API has a lot of benefits, but there's more to it. We can create a JSON-Schema for the input and the response! If we know the JSON structure, we can even go one step further. The graphql-js implementation has an excellent visitor implementation which makes this quite easy. ![]() If we walk through the AST of this GraphQL Operation, we're able to extract the exact JSON structure of both input and response. WunderGraph does this de-inlining by default which brings us to an important conclusion.Ī Persisted GraphQL Operation is a function that takes a JSON Object and returns a JSON Object.Ī function with this specification is actually very useful! If we're de-inlining all GraphQL Variables, they "must" be supplied as a JSON Object. GraphQL Variables can either be supplied "inline", meaning, as part of the GraphQL Operation / Document. Both, input and response can be expressed as a JSON Object.įor the response, it's obvious. It's one of my favorite examples because it contains so many cool features.Īs you can see, it's a function that takes an input and returns a response. Let's have a look at a GraphQL Operation to make things clearer. So, a persisted GraphQL Operation is a function that optionally takes a few arguments and returns a JSON Object. most applications don't change the Operations at runtime.you can still supply variables, just not change the content.they are like stored procedures or prepared statements.Sorry for the backlinking intermission, seo hacks.Īlright, a few facts about persisted GraphQL Operations. So here I am, writing a shorter one with a bit more focus. The problem is, I've realised that this blog post was a bit too long. In this post, I've listed 13 GraphQL security vulnerabilities and how Persisted Operations help solving them.įinally, I've wrote extensively about the Fusion of GraphQL, REST, JSON-Schema and HTTP2. Another time, I was talking about what happens if we treat the GraphQL Operation as the API schema. Additionally, Persisted Operations help a lot with Versioning and keeping APIs backwards compatible. I keep writing about this topic, for example I think that GraphQL is not meant to be exposed over the internet. I don't believe that GraphQL servers should directly expose their API. Let's do it!Īs some might know, I'm the biggest fan of Persisted GraphQL Operations. Implementing GraphQL servers and using GraphQL clients to query them is becoming boring, isn't it? How about trying something new? How about doing a crossover between OpenAPI, JSON-Schema and GraphQL? Today, I'd like to show you an unusual use case for the Query language: Building JSON APIs with JSON-Schema validation. GraphQL is known as a Query Language to Query Graphs. 8/1/2023 0 Comments Julius jones oklahoma deutsch“I’m so grateful to everyone who used their voice and helped to save Julius’s life today,” she said. She also thanked Stitt and the parole board. Kardashian West said Thursday on Twitter that she spent much of Wednesday on the phone with Jones between his visits with lawyers and his family. After that, reality television star Kim Kardashian West and other professional athletes with Oklahoma ties, including NBA stars Russell Westbrook, Blake Griffin and Trae Young, and NFL quarterback Baker Mayfield, urged Stitt to commute Jones’ death sentence and spare his life. The profile of Jones’ case grew significantly after it was featured in “The Last Defense,” a three-episode documentary produced by Oscar-winning actress Viola Davis that aired on ABC in 2018. Jones was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to die for the 1999 shooting death of Paul Howell, a businessman from the Oklahoma City suburb of Edmond, during a carjacking. You’re not just gonna say ‘Yay!’ and be done with it,” she said. “It’s kind of like somebody gave you a million dollars. “He is so grateful that all of these people have come together.”Īt the Capitol, Devona Willis, 45, an Oklahoma City woman, described the announcement as “a celebration.” “Julius has always been so amazed by the fact that so many people God has brought together, Republicans and Democrats, Black, white, gay, straight, Native,” Jossell said. Jossell said Jones sounded overwhelmed by the support when they talked earlier Thursday. Prayer vigils were held at the Oklahoma state Capitol, and barricades were erected outside the governor’s mansion. Jones’ looming execution - and Stitt’s silence on his decision - prompted high school students across Oklahoma City to walk out of their classes Wednesday, and protests had been planned Thursday in Los Angeles Washington Newark, New Jersey and Saint Paul, Minnesota. “Governor Stitt took an important step today towards restoring public faith in the criminal justice system by ensuring that Oklahoma does not execute an innocent man,” Bass said in a statement. Several panel members said they doubted the evidence that led to his conviction.Īmanda Bass, a lawyer representing Jones, said the team had hoped Stitt would grant Jones a chance at parole, but they were grateful that he wasn’t being executed. Just Wednesday, in a separate death row case, the state’s Pardon and Parole Board voted 3-2 to grant clemency, citing lethal injection protocols.Įarlier this month, that same board also recommended in a 3-1 vote that Stitt commute Jones’ sentence to life in prison with the possibility of parole. Oklahoma’s methods for capital punishment have been a concern for years. But today is a good day, and I am thankful to Governor Stitt for that.”Įarlier Thursday, Jones’ attorneys filed a last-minute emergency request seeking a temporary stop to his execution, saying Oklahoma’s lethal injection procedures pose a “serious and substantial risk of severe suffering and pain to prisoners.” The lawyers cited last month’s execution in which John Marion Grant convulsed and vomited as he was put to death. “I still believe that every day Julius spends behind bars is an injustice, and I will never stop speaking out for him or fighting to free him. “For over twenty years, I have been haunted by the idea of watching my baby boy die in an execution chamber for a murder that occurred when he was home with his family,” Madeline Davis-Jones said. Jones’ mother released a statement Thursday expressing her gratitude. It’s a day to recognize all the people who have come together to be able to fight for Julius,” said Rev. “After prayerful consideration and reviewing materials presented by all sides of this case, I have determined to commute Julius Jones’ sentence to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole,” Stitt said in a news release.Ī crowd of Jones’ supporters at the Oklahoma Capitol broke out into loud applause and cheers when the decision was announced shortly after noon Thursday, and more than 100 supporters who had gathered outside the prison in McAlester erupted in cheers. He had been scheduled for execution at 4 p.m. Kevin Stitt commuted the 41-year-old Jones’ death sentence to life imprisonment. Oklahoma’s governor spared the life of Julius Jones on Thursday, just hours before his scheduled execution that had drawn widespread outcry and protests over doubts about his guilt in the slaying of a businessman more than 20 years ago. This is pretty big given the current trends. Support for both mobile and more stylistic water. Wakes are nice but splashes just better bang for the buck because you can use that to cover more of what you need, like stuff hitting the water as well as splashes around boats. I'd say splashes around moving objects is probably more important, if you were having to make a choice. From the screenshots it looks like you are heading in a better direction on that. Like I can't create big smooth rolling waves in playway. Playway went for realism too much here IMO and didn't factor in gameplay. These aren't ones I necessarily need but caught my attention for things that could be improved. Sad because he has a great water system, is just clueless about marketing.īack to features. He sells to the government and he thought oh it's worth the same to Unity developers. But the fact is he didn't get that what he thinks the product is worth has nothing to do with anything. Complete failure and he tried to blame it on everyone else. So have a base version well into the hobby price range that you can sell a lot of units of. You might also look at breaking it up into a modular product. Like really $100 even? And I can't remember it ever changing to keep up with changes in the market. Playway water for example, god the worst price point ever. If you want to make the most money from it that is. Just thinking about it in terms of what is 'fair' is all wrong. So the best price really has nothing to do with the merits of the water system on it's own, without any context of competition or who you are selling to. But if this new solution was say $89, you would probably pick up a lot of sales that would have gone to Hydroform. So you will probably find a lot of people settle for that. Plywood is cheaper and stronger, and will not be subject to warping, cracking, shrinking or stretching unless you place it in the most extreme environments. a pine cab finished in an antique oil or french polished would look fabulous! Is it strong enough ? Almost certainly, but it is still a soft wood and much easier to damage during construction or when moving the cab around for example. If you use any old pine, it will almost certainly warp and crack after construction on something that big. We would have to go to a specialist timber merchant, but things may be different where you are. You'd need to build it from kiln-dried wood and that's not something you'd get from a normal DIY place here. It would certainly be possible to build a full-sized cabinet out of pine but, certainly in the UK, it would be very expensive. Are there any advantages in using plywood? It’s all a bit bloated and unfocused but the game’s pacing is slow enough that you never get too overwhelmed. There’s also dash attack and, exclusively for the remake, a Yoshi style flutter move that allows you to hover briefly in mid-air. For ghost enemies he has to collect a power pellet to eat them, but there are also metal enemies where you have to swallow a metal pill to defeat them (which also turns you metallic and allows you sink to the bottom of water areas). The gameplay mechanics are more complex, to the point of being over-egged, with Pac-Man able to both ground pound enemies and shoot collected dots at them. This is technically a platformer, but there’s very little precision jumping going on and while you do get to move around in 3D to a limited degree this could easily have been a straight 2D platformer and little would have been lost. Remade for the modern day, that sense of battling the limitations of the hardware is lost and it’s much more obvious just how simplistic the level design is. The game’s graphics in general were well above average for the time, with the sensibly restrained camera making the best of the PS1’s infamously insubstantial polygons. Although it’s also interesting that developer Nowpro went to the trouble of updating the original CGI intro, which back in 1999 was quite the technical achievement, and adding a few new ones throughout the rest of the game. Pac-Man is now renamed Pac-Mom, as a result of the recent legal dispute. The only points of interest are that they choose to do this on his birthday, which almost turns the game into a gritty revenge saga, and that Ms. In terms of story the game involves Pac-Man’s family being kidnapped by the minions of an evil robot Pac-Man. You could also surmise that they’re considering making a new entry, but surely if they did make a new Pac-Man platformer it’d be a modern open world game and not something so conceptually limited as this. The simplest explanation for the remake’s existence is that Bandai Namco saw the success of the Crash Bandicoot and Spyro The Dragon remakes and wanted a slice of the same pie (while conveniently ignoring that both those remakes included all three games in their respective trilogies). Although the original plan for the game was to make it an open world title, no doubt inspired by Super Mario 64 and Spyro The Dragon, the final product is a mostly linear, mostly 2D adventure closer in pitch to the original Crash Bandicoot games. When Bandai Namco first announced the remake, it was as if it was the return of a much beloved classic, so we’ll give them the benefit of the doubt and assume it was popular at the time, at least somewhere in the world. ![]() Initially released for the original PlayStation in 1999 (2000 in Europe) we’ve not known a single person to ever mention it, or its two sequels, in the last 23 years. ![]() We promised we’d give up acting surprised at how increasingly more obscure games were getting full-blown remakes, but consider our minds boggled that anyone remembers Pac-Man World, let alone decided to remake it. ![]() Yet another PS1 era 3D platformer is given the remake treatment, but does Namco’s Pac-Man World really deserve the attention?
